Default Will online experience help me with live play?

Hi guys I'm seventeen years old and I plan to save in order to build a bankroll before I go to a casino when I am eighteen. I consider myself fairly competent when it comes to Poker as I have read a lot of material watched lots of videos and played a lot online with play money on Pokerstars. I also have done lots of studying on bankroll management to prevent my self from going broke as best I can and I plan to follow these rules religiously throughout my Poker career.

Will continuing to play online give me an edge when I finally start going to a casino when I am eighteen?

Thank you for your time and for any advice in advance.

It will help you as much as playing with legos will help you build a car. You need to play for real money in some form to learn how people play for real money. That can be home games, online micro stakes games, low buy in tournaments, etc. Very little from what you learn at the play money tables will help you in real money games.

Thanks Equity for your response. Do you have any further suggestions for me then?

For experience just playing any real money game. For learning and training there are a variety of options that include books, training sites, and coaching. It all depends on what you can afford, how fast you want to learn, and your preferred method of learning.

Also, I just remembered, if you have an iOS or android device you can use the app called InstaPoker. I think it is a great app to improve your game and I recommend it to everyone that wants to learn to play better. Jonathan Little has some good hand packs to get you started in low stakes cash games. Good luck!

Yup, play money will only get you so far, basically just the mechanics of the game.

Real money online games will teach you Fear. The fear of losing. You'll learn how to control your own, while pressuring others. Without the fear there is no point to playing really. Play money has no value, so there is no fear.

That's one reason why I never took to NL cash that well. I would count the bet sizes in dollar value, I couldn't separate the bets from the money. Cash, I much prefer Limit. I would sit with my buy-in, which I had already accounted for budget wise, and whatever the bet size would be, that was a bet, not a dollar amount. It didn't matter if I was playing $20/$40 or .05/.10 limit, a bet is still a bet. Similar reasons for tourney's too, your stack has a theoretical value, but it doesn't mean anything till you get paid.

Not sure if any that really helps, but there ya go.

Play real money games, gain experience.

Yes I agree, play money will only teach the mechanics of the game. The game changes significantly with real money on the line and my suggestion for pokerstars is to start with micro sit n go games before going onto the MTT but again go with the ones with limited entrants ie 180/360 max players. When you are competent there move on to the larger fields. A warning though for the micro stakes, a lot of players there have bankrolls where they dont care about the stakes and the "bad beats" will appear more frequent than at higher stakes as those players more often than not will be in hands they shouldnt be in and suck out on you a lot. The micro stakes have a lot in common with play money due to those players. Learn to cope with suck outs and bad beats and move on firing up the next tourney, you will get there.

As far as cash games goes for beginners/learning players, the returns can be awesome %s but the flip side is also true and you WILL lose your bankroll fast there. If you decide to play cash start with limit as you will limit your losses and gain valuable experience.

Lastly get onto a forum like this and get as much knowledge as you can. Learn from the hands posted here and good luck!

"It's just pocket change to most people, but getting $10 on a online site these days can be difficult."

just to emphasize my remarks re micro stakes, If 10$ is pocket change how much more (or less) wil 0.10c not be like play money for them?

    Good question!!
But, as far as my knowledge, there is a difference between online casino gaming and live casino gaming. Anyways, you can practice casino games online and then try looking for the best live land based casinos where you find yourself more confident and safer as a newbie.
    All the best!!

Just go for online casino and practice hard. One day you will surely get the confidence to grab the chance in live casino and win the best you deserve.
